U.S. Army Crime Records Department

The Crime Records Center is organized under the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division’s Business Operations Directorate and serves as the record holding area for Army CID and Military Police law enforcement records.

The Crime Records center processes government agency requests for records and suitability background checks as a “Routine Use” of the Privacy Act for the following purposes:

1. Suitability for access or continued access to classified information.

2. Suitability for access to military installations or industrial firms engaged in government projects/contracts.

3. Suitability for Army promotions, nominations, retirements, positions of significant trust (POSTA), SHARP, and specialized schools.

4. Suitability for awards or similar benefits.

5. Department of Veterans Affairs – Veterans claims, character determination, etc..

6. Federal, State, and Local Government Agencies requesting a background check on an employee or applicant, or state licensing (non-law enforcement positions).

7. Federal, State, and Local Child Protection Services or Family Support Agencies.

8. Federal, State, and Local Agencies to comply with the Victim and Witness Assistance Program and the Victims' Rights and Restitution Act of 1990.

9. Use in judicial or adjudicative proceedings including litigation or in accordance with a court order.

10. Federal, State, and Local law enforcement agencies and private sector entities for the purposes of complying with mandatory background checks and the National Child Protection Act of 1993.

11. Immigration and Naturalization Service, Department of Justice, for use in alien admission and naturalization inquiries.

Media and Personal Record Request: The CRC does not process media and personal record requests. To request records visit the ► Army CID Freedom of Information/Privacy Act webpage or contact the ► Army CID Public Affairs Office.

Expungement Requests: If you are seeking to have your record expunged based on the probable cause determination according to Department of Defense Instruction 5505.7 and the FY24 National Defense Authorization Act, please visit the ► Army CID Freedom of Information/Privacy Act webpage under “Privacy Act Request to Change Records.”

Submitting Requests to the CRC: If you are a government agency requesting records for official business and your request falls into one of the above listed categories, provide the following information.

 

1. Submit an official request via email or fax, email is preferred.

2. The request must be on an official agency letterhead, signed, and include the subjects full name, date of birth, and complete Social Security Number.

3. State the purpose of the request, the type of investigation you are conducting, why you are seeking the records, and how the records will be used.

4. If for employment purposes, a physical ink signed consent form is required.
