Special Agent (SA) Peter J. Tolentino assumed the duties of Acting Director, Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division (Army CID) in August 2025. Reporting directly to the Under Secretary of the Army, he leads the Department’s independent criminal investigative authority, ensuring freedom from undue command influence. Army CID is a global agency responsible for felony criminal investigations, war crimes and terrorism investigations, criminal intelligence, cybercrime, forensics, and protective service operations for key Department of War leaders.
Prior to this appointment, SA Tolentino was promoted to the Senior Executive Service in February 2025 and served as Deputy Director of Army CID, overseeing directorates providing global support for significant criminal investigations, protective services, forensics, and investigative support to military commissions. He maintained executive liaison with federal, state, and local law enforcement, and oversaw training, personnel readiness, and logistical support for contingency operations.
Before joining Army CID in March 2023 as the Assistant Director of the Investigations and Operations Directorate, SA Tolentino served over 20 years with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). Key leadership roles within NCIS included: Special Agent-in-Charge, Economic Crimes Field Office (2022-2023); Deputy Assistant Director, Criminal Investigations and Operations (2021-2022); Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge, Far East Field Office, Yokosuka, Japan (2017-2021); and Division Chief, Death, Violent Crimes, and Cold Case (2015-2017). He also served as a Senior NCIS Representative to the Department of Defense Office of the Inspector General (2014-2015) and held supervisory special agent positions in Miramar, CA (2012-2014) and Pearl Harbor, HI (2009-2012).
SA Tolentino holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science (Pre-Law) from Catawba College. He is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Secretary of Defense Global War on Terrorism Medal, the United States Central Command Joint Civilian Achievement Award and Medal, and the Department of the Army Commander’s Award for Public Service.
